Our second opinion may give you a second chance.

Request a Second Opinion or Add Cedars-Sinai Specialists to Your Hometown Treatment Team

If you or your child has been diagnosed with a tumor of the brain or spinal cord, receiving a second opinion may confirm your diagnosis and give you added confidence in the recommended treatment plan. It also may allow you to discover other options that may be available.

If you would like to receive a second opinion from the specialists at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, you have two options, depending on your location and circumstances. You may arrange a personal visit to meet with our doctors for a full consultation, or you may have members of our team provide their evaluations and recommendations to your local doctors through our Scan Review Program – and you never have to leave home.

Scheduling a Consultation

If you would like to schedule a full consultation in person, call the Brain Tumor Center at (310) 423-7900 or 1-800-CEDARS-1 (1-800-233-2771). You also may send us an e-mail. Our staff will assist you with scheduling, insurance and other considerations. We also will provide information on travel and accommodations if you are coming to Southern California from a distance.

To prepare for your visit and make it as productive as possible, collect your most recent imaging scans, such as MRIs or CTs, and your medical records from recent procedures and hospital stays, if possible.

On the day of your appointment, bring someone along who can provide emotional support during this difficult time, help you collect, organize and understand detailed information, and offer guidance as you make difficult decisions. It’s a good idea to bring a notebook along, too, and take detailed notes during your consultation for later review.

Arranging a Scan Review

The Scan Review Program is a consultation service offered to your primary care physician to help guide your treatment. It is designed to give a basic review of your diagnostic imaging scans and offer information on resources and the newest treatment methods. A scan review gives you and your local physicians the recommendations and support of a highly specialized multidisciplinary team.

There is a $50 administrative fee, and the entire review process usually takes one to three weeks.

How to Get Started

You may start the process of requesting a Scan Review immediately by printing and completing the appropriate Medical History Form below.
Adult Brain Tumor - Medical History Review Form
Pediatric Brain Tumor - Medical History Review Form
You will need Adobe® Reader® to view and print these documents from your
desktop. If you do not have this software, you may download it FREE from Adobe's website.

If you live in California or Michigan, you may send your scans and Medical History Form directly to the Department of Neurosurgery. All other United States residents and international residents are required by law to have the Medical History Form completed and submitted by their primary care physician.

Be sure the form is filled out completely and all appropriate boxes are checked because an incomplete form can cause the review process to be delayed. Also, please include your personal street address, no post office box addresses.

What to Include

Have the Medical History Form and your two most recent scans – both before and after surgery or radiation therapy, if applicable – sent to the Brain Tumor Center at the Department of Neurosurgery. MRI scans are preferred over CT scans if they are available, and scans should be recent within three months. Also, ask your physician to provide copies of any pathology and operative reports, as well as any other images, such as magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) scans, that may be relevant.

Scans, forms and the $50 administrative fee (a cashier’s check or money order payable to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center) should be sent by overnight delivery service, such as FedEx or UPS, with a tracking number.

Send all items, scans and reports together to:
Brain Tumor Center
Department of Neurosurgery
8631 W. Third St. Suite 800E
Los Angeles, CA 90048

The program is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Pacific Time, Monday through Friday.

If you have digital copies of scans, they may be e-mailed to  Mention in your e-mail that you are also sending the Medical History Form and any other documents by overnight delivery.

International residents: Please be sure to send only copies of requested items that do not need to be returned. To keep the Scan Review Program available with a minimal fee, we cannot be responsible for returning original MRI films, CDs
or Medical History Forms to international addresses.

What You May Expect

Members of our multidisciplinary team will review your information and reply by mail, usually within three weeks of receiving your scans. If you live in California or Michigan, our findings will be mailed directly to you. In all other cases, the findings will be sent to your primary care physician.
